An Invitation to Think

Read all about our inaugural system event that brought the whole Fullscope community together to think about how we can do things differently.

On Thursday 13 June, at Storey’s Field in Cambridge, we gathered for an opportunity for colleagues from across the local children and young people’s ecosystem to come together, learn more about Fullscope’s recent work, participate in workshops and take time, in person, to think about system change.

The Keynote speech was given by Professor Nicola Walshe from University College London, who has been integral to the work Fullscope has been doing with partners around Creative Health.

“Fullscope’s system-level work by design requires interdisciplinary collaboration to shift ways of thinking that have been conditioned over many years of siloed working….The right care envelopes the individual young person as a hug; it is comforting, it feels safe, it protects from further harm, it is there when needed.”

– Professor Nicola Walshe, UCL.

Fullscope’s Guiding principles

Workshops focused our discussions, and were each framed around Fullscope’s Guiding Principles, developed by the Fullscope Partnership Board during early 2024 under the Amplify and Influence strand as highlighted in the Fullscope Strategic Plan. The event provided an opportunity to explore how we can build and be part of a system that is integrated to care, through the priorities set out in the principles, namely of collaborative work, person-centred approach and the right support at the right time for children and young people.

An Invitation to Think workshops

Participants could choose to take part in one of the following workshops:

  • A Call for Being Together Differently: exploring the creative health work undertaken by Cambridge Curiosity & Imagination and Fullscope.

  • An Integrated System of Care: thinking about partnership in practice, through the lens of YOUnited (Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s integrated children and young people’s mental health offer).

  • Complex Needs or a Complicated System to Navigate?: exploring The Kite Trust’s work with LGBTQ+ young people to reflect on how the system can use collaboration to better implement a person-centred approach that supports young people to access the right support at the right time.

Participants were also invited to take part in an interactive exploration involving children, young people and families throughout the event. We will be sharing the facilitators’ reflections and outcomes of these workshops and activities this summer.

“Disrupting thinking to shift the children and young people’s mental health system to one which is integrated to care.”

– Professor Nicola Walshe, UCL.

Reflections

Everyone was invited to share their reflections before coming together for a nourishing lunch from Cambridge Sustainable Food as we pondered the following questions.

“The question is not how we can fix services, but rather, as I stand beside you how can I support you to create change?”

– Radical Help by Hilary Cottam
